Identification of Mystery Plant

Can anyone offer clues as to the identity of a mystery plant collected near Las Cruces, New Mexico? I took a sample, thinking it was quite distinctive even without flowers. Looking at it, however, I find that even though it does have tiny flowers, it doesn't look like anything I'm familiar with. (I do have a recall filed for the library's checked-out copy of a New Mexico flora.)

Images and description at: http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/FLORA/tfplab/mysteryplant.html

I'm sure it will turn out to be something as common as dirt and twice as obvious, but right now it has me stumped.

Many thanks,
