Part-time Post Available

Dr Stephen L. Jury s.l.jury at READING.AC.UK
Thu Aug 9 16:39:43 CDT 2001

The European Commission-funded Euro+Med PlantBase project is seeking to
employ a part time member of staff, for two years, to join its Secretariat,
based at the University of Reading.

Euro+Med PlantBase has been established to provide an on-line database and
information system for the vascular plants of the Euro-Mediterranean
region, using modern bioinformatics techniques. The project is a
collaborative effort involving numerous botanical institutions throughout
Europe and the Mediterranean, and will ultimately be a rich resource of up
to date electronic information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of this
region, as well providing information on related areas such as ecology,
mapping, conservation, karyology, phytosociology and phytochemistry. The
project began in September 2000, and the development of the database, as
well as the establishment of a network of expert taxonomists throughout
Europe, is well under way.

The new member of staff will be responsible for the maintenance and
development of the project website, and will assist the Database Manager
with the upkeep of the Euro+Med Database. In addition, he or she will
undertake some of the day to day administrative tasks arising from the project.

The successful candidate will possess good computational skills, in particular
an understanding of the structure and use of relational databases, and
experience with nomenclatural database management systems. The ability to
design and update web pages, using html and java script, will also be
required.

Candidates must have a clear understanding of botanical nomenclature and,
most importantly, a meticulous eye for detail, as much of the database work
will involve checking incoming datasets for accuracy.

Because the project is being run as a collaborative effort between several
institutions throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, knowledge of other
European languages and an interest in the European flora would also be
advantageous.

The gross starting salary for the post will be ?19,486 (pro rata, for 20
hours a week). The contract is expected to run for two years from September
1, 2001.

The closing date for applications is August 31st, and interviews will be
held in early September.
