And I forgot to reply to all. Better that mistake as the default than
the alternative. Barry commented that $26,410 would be an entry level
salary for a secretary in a law firm in his part of the world.

Our personnel people said that a) any position that requires a degree
should be professional; b) any professional position should start at
$26410. That is a BS degree.
So far as I am aware, we offered a starting salary of $30,000 - looking
for an MS preferably plus experience. Being a small town, without a lot
of alternative employment opportunities, we do have somewhat of a
captive population. As a letter to the editor remarked, yes there are
jobs available in the valley. Most pay on the assumption that you have a
spouse with benefits or a parent that provides them. The CM position
does have benefits; the comment merely gives the pay climate in town.
The advertisement went something like this:
Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities are care and development of
the collections and database of the Intermountain Herbarium; answering
inquiries, including but not limited to those involving plant
identification; training and supervising the undergraduate assistants
who work in the herbarium; ensuring access and providing appropriate
guidance to individuals interested in using the herbarium. Engagement in
other professional activities that will enhance the professional
reputation of the herbarium and the incumbent will be encouraged.
And how much were they paid, in today's terms, when Asa Gray was a boy?

You can forget question Number 3. Collections
managers haven't received reasonable salaries since
Asa Gray was a boy.
