Database Supervisor in Economic Botany
The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is seeking an excellent
candidate to fill the position of Database Supervisor in the
Institute of Economic Botany (IEB). This position is part of
NYBG's planned initiative to move information about all collections
at the Garden (herbarium, economic botany, laboratory, etc.) into
a central database system being developed at NYBG (CASSIA). The
Database Supervisor position is for two years, and, in this initial
two years of CASSIA development and implementation, the Database
Supervisor will work closely with researchers and staff in the
Institute of Economic Botany, the Computer Services Department, and
the NYBG Herbarium.
Duties will include maintaining economic botany authority files,
overseeing new data entry from economic botany data files containing
collection and sample information about economically useful plants,
and working with the CASSIA development group. The Database
Supervisor will spend 1/4 of his/her time on economic botany research
under the direction of Dr. Michael Balick. The overall goal is to
keep the Database Supervisor up-to-date on all research,
data-gathering, and data presentation methods in the changing field of
economic botany by hands-on participation in ongoing research
endeavors in the IEB to which plant specimens are attached.
Consideration of applications will begin immediately. The
successful candidate will have an M.S. or B.S. in Economic Botany,
Anthropology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, or other field
involving economic botany, and computer skills, especially database
experience in economic botany. Please submit a resume, cover
letter and the names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of at
least 3 references to:
