Stuck caps and their breakage by prying, tapping, etc. are also a problem
in chemistry.  I've found that a large pipe wrench often overcomes the
problem without breaking the cap - the teeth will grip the smooth types of
caps as well as the ridged types, and the torque which is applied is larger
than that which can be attained by hand.
